En tant que ministre de la Culture, l'honorable M. A. Nanga est un homme du peuple, aussi cynique que charmant, et un opportuniste roublard. Au premier abord, le contraste entre Nanga et Odili, un ancien élève en visite au ministère, paraît immense. Mais dans cette atmosphère de « chacun pour soi », l'idéalisme d'Odili se heurte bientôt à ses désirs – et les railleries personnelles et politiques des deux hommes menacent de plonger le pays dans le chaos. Publié, de façon prophétique, quelques jours seulement avant la première tentative de coup d'État au Nigeria en 1966, « Un homme du peuple » est une œuvre essentielle de son travail sur l'histoire africaine moderne.
