Higginson (1823-1911) a fréquenté les personnages les plus emblématiques de son époque et participé aux événements les plus importants. Pourtant, qui se souvient de lui aujourd'hui ? Ce récit est la réponse de Christian Garcin à “la mémoire ingrate des hommes”, une tentative de rendre justice à cet illustre oublié, cantonné “dans l'ombre gigantesque de la petite poétesse d'Amherst”.
