À bord d'un paquebot en route pour l'Argentine, deux hommes s'affrontent aux échecs. Le premier, Mirko Czentovic, est le champion mondial de ce jeu. Le second, M. B., n'a pas touché à un échiquier depuis vingt ans, par ordre du médecin. Car la dernière fois qu'il a joué, un contexte particulièrement douloureux l'a rendu schizophrène. Ces deux personnages singuliers et mystérieux attisent la curiosité du narrateur, passionné de psychologie. Dès lors, il se met en tête de les faire parler, et nous livre deux troublants récits enchâssés.
