Dans une petite ville de l'ouest du Nigeria, quatre jeunes frères – le plus jeune a neuf ans, l'aîné quinze – profitent de l'absence de leur père, très strict, pour aller pêcher dans une rivière locale interdite. Ils y rencontrent un dangereux fou qui prédit que l'aîné sera tué par un autre frère. Cette prophétie brise leurs liens indéfectibles et déclenche une série d'événements tragiques aux proportions quasi mythiques.
