Le 22 octobre 1849, Gustave Flaubert quitte Croisset pour un voyage en Orient qui va durer un an et demi. Il a 28 ans, ce voyage sera une expérience décisive. De retour à Croisset, il reprend ses carnets de route sans pour autant en envisager la publication. Ce sera sa nièce Caroline qui, après la mort de Flaubert, les publiera dans les "Oeuvres complètes". Edition "expurgée", éliminant les confessions les plus intimes, notamment érotiques. Le collectionneur propriétaire actuellement du manuscrit a consenti à la publication intégrale des "Carnets". Ils sont augmentés d'une préface proposant une interprétation nouvelle de l'oeuvre de Flaubert, de notes qui, en regard du texte même, donnent des informations historiques, topographiques et littéraires, enfin d'un index détaillé.
