How to play BookMasters

BookMasters is a collectible card game of books, free and playable in your browser. Every card is a real book from the catalog of Les Contes Infusés, an independent bookshop, and its rarity comes from how notable it is in that catalog. The loop comes down to four moves: unwrap, browse, shelve, sell.

1. Unwrap a parcel

A free parcel arrives every 10 minutes. They stack up to 5 in your stock; once it’s full, the timer stops, so come back before then. New players start with a full stock.

Each parcel holds 5 different books. Each one is pulled at random, independently of the others: no parcel is guaranteed, and none can be bought.

The odds for every binding are published on the parcel odds page.

2. Browse the book

Each book comes with its cover, its summary when the bookshop has one, and the details of its edition: publisher, year, pages, ISBN. A “View at the bookshop” link opens its page at Les Contes Infusés.

3. Build your library

The books you pull go into your library. Put them on shelves (up to 50), find them by author and set your favorites in your bookplate showcase.

Bind collected works

Each author’s books form their collected works (selected works when the catalog only has a few of them), filled one book at a time. Once you own them all, you can bind them: they become a trophy and earn XP and royalties, 20 R plus 1 R per book for collected works, 10 R plus 1 R per book for selected works.

On hold

Put a book you’re after on hold from its card or its page, or a whole author’s works at once. When you unwrap a parcel, a book on hold gets an “On hold” slip. Your holds fit in up to 20 lists.

4. Sell to the stalls

The stalls buy back any copy, even your last one, for 1 R, whatever its binding: that’s how you part with a book. A rare book is worth far more at auction or in a trade with another player.

Auctions at the Stalls

From level 5, put your books up for auction for other players. There’s no fixed price: you pick a starting price and a duration, from 30 minutes to 24 hours, and the highest bid wins the book. A bid in the last 10 seconds resets the countdown to 1 minute. There are no fees: the seller gets the full final price, and everything is paid in royalties.

Trades between friends

From level 5, propose a trade to a friend: up to 10 books on each side. It doesn’t have to be balanced, or even go both ways: you can simply give a book away. Your friend accepts, declines or counters; without an answer, the offer expires after 72 hours.

Daily reads, streaks and levels

Every day, 3 daily reads, and every week 3 weekly reads, earn you XP: unwrap parcels, find new books, bind collected works. Play several days in a row and your streak grows, which earns XP too. XP raises your level: level 5 opens the Stalls and trades, and pays out 50 R, once.

The golden rule: no real money

Royalties, the in-game currency, can never be converted into money. No parcel, book or royalty is ever sold for real money: you earn everything by playing.
